We are definitely living in an era of "Christian Lite"! Sermons focus on feeling good and prospering, whereas in times past faithful preachers challenged the saints to die to self and to live for God and His holy cause.
The great danger of lukewarmness is that no one seems to recognize it in their own life. Therefore we must allow the word of God to be a mirror in which we see ourselves as we really are.
Leonard Ravenhill wrote his well known book "Why Revival Tarries" more than 50 years ago. A close friend of his, David Wilkerson, says that Brother Ravenhill died with a broken heart that, after 50+ years, the Church had greater need of renewal than when he first wrote and published this book.
Please read the following with an open heart: "A Christian dreaming before his television night by night, has a dead brain and a bankrupt soul. He would do better to persuade God to let him quit this world if he is so out of touch with this lax, loose, licentious age that blindness of the sinner no longer tears his soul."
Brethren, such bold, Biblical, soul-searching messages need to be tearfully proclaimed from every pulpit throughout America today!
Most will reject it, or feel that someone else may need it; but there is a holy remnant who will have ears to hear and hearts to respond to this needed word of God!
We will either have our hearts broken, stirred and changed, or we will settle for having our ears tickled!
What will your choice be?
God bless.

Wisdom From The Past
For those who sincerely desire to live for the Lord in this present age, I would encourage you to look to the past and to consider some of the wisdom of those who have gone before. After all, Hebrews 12 tells of a great cloud of witnesses that we can learn from.
The sad truth is that, at present, there are few examples of what a Godly life truly is! That is because most professed Christians, even leaders, have been blinded and deceived by the spirit of this present age!
Allow me to quote from the writings of A. W. Tozer, who, speaking of the youth in his congregation, had these words: " I refuse to deceive and damn them by teaching that you can be a Christian and love this present world, for you cannot.
You can be a hypocrite and love the world.
You can be a deceived ruler in the religious system and love the world.
You can be a cheap, snobbish, modern Christian and love the world.
But you cannot be a genuine Bible Christian and love the world. It would grieve me to stand alone on this principle, but I will not lie to you about it."
Contrast this with the "entertain them, pamper them, do whatever it takes to keep them in the 'church' mentality that pervades today, and you can begin to see just how far we have fallen!
May the Lord grant us the grace and the boldness to grasp the rope of wisdom that runs all the way back to the Book of Acts, and realize that "if any man loves the world the love of the Father is not in him."
God bless.

Few There Be
Beloved, my heart is grieved over the current state of the Church! Sin is looked upon so lightly, commitment to the the things of the Lord are considered optional, most of those who have been in church for years know so little of the Bible's teachings; yet, everyone feels that they are on the way to God's Heaven!
As God is my witness, it is not my desire to to just be critical, but it is criminal that more "preachers" are not addressing the backslidden state of the Church today!
In my recent reading of the Bible, I have been reading 2 Kings, which is basically an historical book. In this book we read of several of Judah's kings who endeavored to follow after God, but they did not remove the high places where the people continued to offer sacrifices to pagan deities. It seems that the people wanted to keep the Temple observances which the Lord had given through Moses, but they wanted their activities "on the side" also.
This is a picture of much of the church world today: They go to church, "get their praise on", get their blessing; then it's back to their "high place" to pollute their vessels with the grossest of verbal and visual contamination that they call entertainment!
Because of this their thoughts and conversation are increasingly corrupt, but they do not recognize it as such; and, they will even defend their "freedom" to engage in such like!
Please hear me: The strait and narrow way that Jesus said leads to life, is a holy pathway! We cannot enter in thereat unless we willingly lay aside the sin which so easily besets us and receive His cleansing!
Many who engage in sinful activities today have memories of a time when evil was disdained and avoided! But, somehow, the things once despised have become comfortable involvements!
Please hear me! This is not a result of the Lord having changed His mind: It is, rather a result of the heart becoming hardened! God still directs us to avoid even the appearance of evil!
If we are to be among the "few" who find and enter the strait and narrow way, it will be because we have determined to let the word of God be our standard, and we are mortifying the flesh, feeding the spirit, being transformed by the renewing of our minds, taking up our cross and following Jesus every day!
Not a salvation of works, but the Biblical expression of having been born again and becoming a new creation in Christ!
May we have ears to hear.
God bless

HOW?
How can we live a separated, holy life when everything around us is working to draw us away from the ways of the Lord?
Many times over the years I have talked with individuals who were struggling with living out their faith in God. They will typically tell me how difficult it is in their circumstances, as if they are somehow unique, facing temptations that are more challenging than others face.
First of all, this simply is not true! The Bible plainly tells us that there is no temptation that we will ever face that is uncommon to humanity! We all face extreme challenges to our faith!
What I usually find in talking with these people is that they are making little,if any, real effort to live a separated lifestyle! They want to hang with a worldly crowd, keep consuming the same worldly entertainment, simply attempting to add Jesus to their old lifestyle! That will never work!
So, how can we walk in victory over the world, the flesh and the devil?
As in all things, Jesus Christ is our ultimate example! We read, in Hebrews 12:2, that He endured being tempted in all points such as we are, for the joy that was set before Him!
In other words, He kept His eyes on the goal! His mind and heart were filled with the joys which awaited Him st the end of His earthly sojourn!
Paul tells us in Colossians 3:2 that we are to set our minds on things above, on Heavenly things, not on the things of this world.
So the answer to the question of "How?" is this: Make a full commitment to the Lord and to the things of God! Abide in the word and let the word abide in you (John 15:7). Think often about what awaits you at the end of this journey. Separate yourself from carnal things that will most assuredly entangle you. "Press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).
The more that you focus upon and commit to the things of God, the more estranged you will find that you are from the weights and the sins that so easily beset us.
The goal is drawing nearer with each passing moment! Press on! It will be worth it all!
God Bless

Unrealized/Ignored Danger
As I have previously stated, I have a tremendous concern for the current state of the Church, and for those professed Christians who seem to be comfortable with the carnality reflected by the "saints" today.
I am persuaded that the enemy has found entertainment to be one of his most successful inroads into the lives of people. Over the last three to four decades Christians have, after brief, initial protest, embraced whatever the TV and movie producers have pumped out! And, the level of profanity, sexual content and violence has escalated many times over.
Do they no longer have the capacity to be grieved by that which grieves the Lord? Has the Church become like those of whom the Prophet Jeremiah referenced when he spoke of those who had lost their ability to blush with shame?
There is one particular passage of Scripture that addresses this present situation with crystal clarity: Romans chapter one concludes with grave warnings for those who choose sin over holiness, and closes with these words: "Who knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them."
What is the Apostle saying? Just this; that there are people who would never engage in these sins, but they derive vicarious pleasure out of the activities of those who do! Those who laugh at the profane and blasphemous humor; those who revel in the sexual plots of the TV and movie plots; those who no longer weep over sin but, rather, find entertainment value in it!
If we choose to make light of this, we do so to our own eternal hurt!
The Lord has stirred my heart to address a backslidden Church that is in danger of having it's candlestick taken out of His presence (read Revelation two and three). If this speaks to you, then I beseech you to repent and put such things out of your life! If your heart and hands are clean before the Lord, then I beseech you to join with me in praying for, and in working for, a legitimate revival in the Church today!
As we read the Bible we see that those who comprise the true people of God have always been but a remnant of all who profess. This remnant is open to "whosoever", but is made up of only those who have repented of sin and have embraced the Lordship of Jesus Christ!
May we have ears to hear!

Unclean Lips
I've always thought it interesting that the prophet Isaiah, when confronted with the holy presence of God (Isaiah 6), mentioned that he was a man of unclean lips. But further thought reveals the core of His problem.
Jesus stated that the lips simply speak forth what is in our hearts. In other words, if that which issues forth from our mouth is profane, off-color, blasphemous, it is because our heart is defiled!
Isn't it amazing to hear Christians, even preachers, using words and terms that were recognized as wrong just a few short years ago? Some "cutting edge" preachers even consider this to be cool, liberated, enabling them to relate to the sinner.
A more accurate evaluation would be that the heart has been so corrupted by TV, movies, books, music, conversation, etc., that defilement simply flows forth.
What is needed is a revelation, such as Isaiah had, that will cause the people of God to see the wrongness- the sinfulness- of such talk, and to seek remedy at the source.
May the fire from the altar of God truly touch and cleanse the Church once again.
God bless.

Feeding The Birds
As I was thinking about writing this morning, I am compelled to revisit the theme of previous posts: "Break up your fallow ground..." (Hosea 10:12).
I am certain that some tremendous sermons were preached across the length and breadth of our land yesterday. But, I am just as certain that most of them simply became food for the fowls of the air as the word preached fell upon hearts that are hard toward the things of the Lord!
Often I have a sense of grief in a church service as the "praise team" stirs the congregation to lift their hands and their voices in "worship" unto the Lord. I am grieved by the realization that many, if not most, of the people in our services have not cleansed their hearts and, because of this, their "praise" is no more than a religious exercise that is actually a mockery of what true worship ought to be!
People come into the sanctuary from a week of feasting on entertainment that grieves the heart of God; many walk into the church smiling at others even though they have been fighting at home with the family all week; many are involved in sinful sexual activities- and the list goes on, and on, and on!
So, another sermon becomes another feast for the fowls!
What are we to do? What is the solution?
R-E-P-E-N-T! Break up the hardened ground! Apologize to God and pray His forgiveness and His cleansing!
My fervent desire is that our services will become, once again, solemn, holy assemblies in which the glory of God is beheld in such a fashion as to make us aware of our needs to be a holy people!
May the Word, when it comes unto us, not become food for the birds, but, rather, nourishment for our souls, as it finds a place in the broken up ground to take root and bear fruit!
Eternity is overtaking us. Only those who look for the Lord will be received by Him: And, everyone who genuinely has this hope will purify themselves, even as He is pure.
May we have ears to hear.
God bless.

Where Is The Commitment?
I had occasion to talk with a pastor in my city this morning. As we talked, I heard a common lament regarding the lack of faithfulness among the "saints". It seems that little reason is needed for most to miss the appointed times of worship. Not to mention the challenge of getting people to step up and engage in a ministry that requires commitment.
As we talked, it came to my mind that the Lord has always had only a remnant of those who professed who were true believers. It is no different today!
Jesus Christ Himself spoke of the pathway to Heaven as being strait and narrow! Requiring that we genuinely follow Him if we are to have a legitimate hope of spending forever with Him. Jesus said that not everyone who calls Him Lord will enter Heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father!
Why is this message so rejected by the professing church today? How have those who should know better become so deafened and blinded toward the truth?
The call to follow Christ is a call to a radical lifestyle of forsaking sin- even the appearance of evil- and perfecting holiness in the fear of God!
The beauty of the new birth is that it brings to life the desire within us to live in such a fashion!
The last day message to us is "be not deceived." Examine yourself in the light of Scripture, and know that your heart is right with God!
Our eternal soul is worth whatever effort is needed to secure its salvation!
How are we living in light of eternity?
God bless.

NO Good Thing!
Quite a few years ago there was a popular comic strip named "Pogo". It featured Pogo the 'possum and his friends. One of Pogo's famous lines was "We has found the enemy and it is us!"
Pogo's statement could have been taken directly out of Romans chapter 7, which says: "For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) nothing good dwells...". (Romans 7:18 NKJV). This is a lesson that every Christian desperately needs to learn!
The flesh make a tremendous servant, but it is a cruel master! And, it is cunning! That is why we have so many warnings about the flesh n the New Testament.
One thing that we need to realize is that there can be no peaceful coexistence between spirit and flesh; one or the other will prevail. Therefore we are admonished to mortify the (put to death) the fleshly desires that war against the soul.
This we are well able to do through the enabling presence and power of the Spirit of God. And, this we must do if we are to have a Biblical hope of true discipleship.
It is from this basis that the Apostle makes the grand statement found in Romans 8:1, which states freedom from condemnation in Christ!
May we walk in this liberty today!
God bless.

How To Stay Zealous
Do you ever struggle with keeping your faith alive & vibrant? Secondly, do you ever wonder if others struggle like you do?
Paul tells us in his Corinthian letters that no temptations have come our way except those that are common to the human experience. So, yes, others struggle also.
That being the case, why do some persevers while others slack off or fall by the wayside? Thie question deserves careful consideration because we all wil be confronted with it, perhaps many times in the course of our journey through this life!
I believe that first Corinthians chapter fifteen holds the answer. This has been called the great "resurrection chapter" of the Bible. In this passage Paul defines and defends the cardinal doctrine of the resurrection of Christ, as well as that of the believer. This chapter encourages us to consider life from the perspective of etrenity.
In verse fifty eight we are told to, in light of the truth of the resurrection, to press onward in a life of godly conduct, as we pursue the prize!
Let's briefly consider the admonitions of this verse:
"Be steadfast". This implies a decision to take a stand! A commiting of ourselves to a purpose!
"Unmoveable". This is an ongoing reinforcing of that initial decision!
"Always abounding in the work of the Lord." This is the singular point at which most people fail! As the Galatians, most begin well, but one thing or another draws their attention away from their "first love" for the Lord, and, before they realize it, they are backslidden! Oh, many such still go to church; some are even leaders in their churches- but, in their hearts they know that things aren't as they used to be, or as they should be.
So, what can be done?
Simply put: "Repent, and do your first works." This is what Jesus told the Ephesian church in Revelation chapter two. It is still sound advise today!
Then, "abound" in the work of the Lord! There is still a lost world to reach! We live in a generation that knows little of the genuine presence and power of God! Be committed to living out a vibrant Christian witness! Beginning in your home!
Back to Paul's teachings: He assured us that our labor is not in vane in the Lord! All other endeavors are of little, if any, eternal profit, but that which is done for Christ carries with it, not only rewards in this life, but, more importantly, the life to come!
How do we keep our zeal? Stay prayerful, stay busy for God! Stir up that gift of the Holy Spirit which is in you!
There is joy in serving the Lord!
God bless.

Let This Mind Be In You...
In Philippians 2:5 Christians are given this admonition: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." The text then goes on to tell of the humility of Christ in coming to be the Lamb of God who would take away our sins.
This is the end toward which the Lord is leading us: A life that is totally dedicated to the eternal cause of Christ.
But the flesh, our old nature, militates against this, always demanding to be appeased in ways that will satisfy the carnal senses.
The great deception is to believe that we can somehow strike a deal of peaceful coexistence between spirit & flesh! This is absolutely impossible!
In order to have the mind of Christ, we must crucify, or resist the flesh. This is so radically different from that which surrounds us on a daily basis that it will require a determined effort on our part to embrace this Biblical directive.
Whereas the early Church gave much time to fasting and praying, modern "saints" are much more conversant with feasting and playing! And the anemic state of the Church is evidence of this sad truth!
Brothers and sisters, we are called to warfare! Things of eternal consequence hang in the balance! Resist the siren call of the world, flesh and devil, and embrace and nurture the mindset of the Christ who has called us to be His disciples!
The Apostle, in this same chapter, tells of the coming time when every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess the Lordship of Christ; and, then he tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling! In other words, seek the will of God with a sincere and earnest heart!
We're in the heat of the conflict now, but "What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see..."!
Let's be found living as those who expect the return of their Lord!
God Bless.

God Bless.

"Do You Love Me?"
In the last half of the twenty first chapter of the Gospel of John, we find Jesus asking Simon Peter three times, "Do you love me?" Even though Peter is the one being addressed in this passage, the question comes to all who profess that Christ is the Lord of their life.
As a minister I have often heard statements such as: "I don't have to go to church to be a Christian."; or, "I don't have to read the Bible to be a Christian."; or "I don't have to........", you can fill in the blank.
Here is the response that I believe is appropriate: If we feel as if we have to do the things that the Bible simply puts forth as expressions of discipleship, then something is very wrong!
The is a beautiful chorus that was written quite a few years back that says "I will serve thee because I love thee." In this light, I don't have to go to church; rather, I get to be a part of the family of God! I don't have to read the Bible; rather, I have access to the written account of God's loving plan for my life, and His pattern for eternal success!
So, can we truly say that we love the Lord if our heart is at odds with His directives for our lives? Jesus said to Peter, "If you love me, then do what I have directed you to do." Isn't it really simple?
Not a salvation of works, but works flowing forth from a heart that has been reborn by the very Spirit of God!
Walk in His blessings today.

Another Day, Another Week
As I write this entry it is Monday morning. I was out jogging a couple of hours ago, thinking about yesterday's church services. Isn't it great to have the freedoms which we enjoy in America? To openly assemble to worship the Lord according to the dictates of our own hearts?
Anyway, yesterday morning I made a decision to consciously offer my praise as an expression of worship unto the Lord, simply because He is worthy! Some of the songs that were sung were totally unfamiliar to me, honestly, they weren't even all selections that I "liked". But, (and this is a truth that I am trying to establish in my heart and mind) who is worship for anyway?
I am afraid that we often make it all about us! We "go for the feeling" rather than present the "fruit of our lips" as an expression of praise, worship and thanksgiving unto the Lord.
You know, the way in which we do a thing can make all the difference in the world. And, in light of this, I'd like to challenge you to make a personal choice. The very next time that you are in a service, make up your mind that, as you join your voice with the others who are gathered, that you are going to offer up the words of each song as a personal expression of praise unto the One whose amazing grace has made an eternal difference in your life!
I believe that you will find that the entire service will take on an entirely different tone for the better.
Try it. God will be pleased and you will be blessed!

More About The Seed
For anyone who has ever planted a garden, there is no need to explain about weeds, and just how prolific they seem to be! I've often said that if we could come up with vegetable seeds that were as tenacious as weeds, we would solve the world hunger problem in short order!
But, here's the truth that I wish to convey in this posting: Spiritual weeds are just as tenacious, and they will assuredly choke out the good seed if we fail to regularly tend to them!
Just where do the seeds of these destructive weeds come from? The answer is that they are borne about in the winds of our everyday activities; a few words in a conversation, a song with carnal lyrics, a movie of TV program, perhaps something that we are reading- as we can see, these seeds are ever present, and they are seeking a place where they can take root!
This is why Peter warns us to "be sober, be vigilant", because he knew that our adversary, the devil, is always on the prowl, looking for anyplace where he can plant his seeds to steal, kill and destroy!
We dare not take this lightly! We must daily evaluate what has been sown into our lives, and eliminate the bad, while nurturing the good. Just plain common sense gardening practices!
Make no mistake about it; the things we are considering have grave and eternal consequences! And, the tragic reality is that much of the Church no longer sees the destructive nature of these weeds!
As an example, consider the Church of just one generation ago. "Sin" wasn't a bad word to be avoided, but a label which was boldly placed upon those things that were known to be destructive. For those of you who are old enough to remember; how many of those things, known to wrong, are no longer considered to be "all that bad."?
Sin is still deadly, it has but one wage to pay. God still requires holiness of those who have a legitimate hope of heaven, and we are still to keep our hearts with all diligence, because out of it flows the issues of life.
God Bless

I've Plowed, Now What?
An absolute essential to spiritual renewal is breaking up of fallow, or hardened, ground. This is typically a process that the Lord takes us through as we set ourselves to seek Him.
After this is accomplished, and we know that our heart is tender towards Him, we have to plant seeds of renewal. We know that the word of God is referred to as seed in the Gospels.
This is a point that is taken all too lightly by most in the Church today. It amazes me that adherents of false religions will become genuine students of their "scriptures", actually learning what they profess to believe, while Christians seemingly are content to go along year after year without growing in their knowledge of the Lord throughout His word; thus leading to a "feelings" oriented religion.
When the people of the Lord were on the verge of entering into the promised land, as recorded in the Book of Joshua, the Lord spoke to Joshua, saying: "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do all that is written therein, for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success" (Josh. 1:8).
And, then, in John 15:7 we find the New Testament equivalent of this, as Jesus says: "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what you will, and it shall be done."
The seed determines the harvest! If the word of Christ is dwelling richly in our hearts, we will enjoy a harvest of His grace. If, on the other hand, we are filling our hearts with things of the world, then we will not know the close relationship with the Lord what He has called us unto.
Romans chapter plainly tells us that if we sow to the flesh we will reap corruption; however, if we sow to the spirit, will will have a harvest of life and peace!
The choice is pretty clear as we consider it from an eternal perspective. May we, by God's grace, continually sow the seeds of His divine purpose into our lives!

More On Plowing The Ground
As I mentioned in the most previous post, The prerequisite to revival is a breaking up of the fallow ground, or the softening of hearts.
Having lived for most of my life in Indiana, which is, largely, an agricultural state, I have observed this process in action. Farmers attach the proper piece of equipment to their tractor and cover their fields, breaking up hardened earth so that the sown seed can find a place to germinate and take root, safe from the always hungry birds that are ever present. Obviously, this requires much time and labor; but, it is absolutely necessary if the expected harvest is to be realized.
So it is with the furtherance of the Kingdom in our lives. In fact, Jesus addressed this n the 13th chapter of Matthew, in what we refer to as the parable of the sower. The Lord spoke of 4 different types of soil: hardened, stony, thorny, and good.
The fact of the matter, and one of the lessons to be learned from this parable, is that all of these different soils had the potential to become "good" soil. All that was needed was a breaking up and a cleaning up so that the seed would be able to take root and be safe from the fowls of the air!
Back to the farmer and his equipment: The "tool" that we are given to use if the word of God, which is "quick and powerful, sharper than any two-edged sword...". It will discern between the thoughts and intents of the heart, and reveal unto us our true condition. As we yield to the probing, tilling, cutting action of the Word, we will find ourselves more prepared to genuinely receive the good seed of the Word, which will result in renewal and spiritual growth.
If we will, out of a hungry and sincere heart, do our part in seeking the Lord, He will do His part in meeting us in a life changing fashion!
May all who truly love Him hear and respond!

Steps Toward Renewal
The need for spiritual in the American Church is obvious to most Christians today, but many are wondering what we need to do in order to bring this about.
I must quickly say that renewal comes only from the Lord; but, having said that, I know of a certainty that He desires for the Church to be healthy and vibrantly alive in the Holy Spirit.
So, knowing that renewal is the will of God, how do we pursue it? Over the next few postings here I want to enumerate some specific steps that, I believe, will bring revival, or renewal.
First of all, we must heed the admonition found in Hosea 10:12 which tells us to break up our fallow ground. This is speaking of ground that has simply been ignored, and, as the elements have impacted it, it has become hardened! In this condition any seed sown will simply become food for the fowls of the air!
I have an illustration of this just outside of my front door. We recently had to have a new sewer line installed that runs from our house to the street. Because of this there is a strip of barren ground about 4 feet wide which runs the entire length of our yard. This ground, which was soft- even mushy, as the equipment tilled it up, has become almost as hard as our sidewalk! I know that it will need to have some grass seed planted on it very soon, but I also know that, unless this ground is broken up, sowing seed will be nothing more than a waste of time and money!
It's like that with the good seed of the word of God! If hearts are not prepared- broken up- to be receptive, there will be no fruit borne!
So, the obvious question is this: Do we truly desire a renewing work of God in our lives and in our churches? If we do, then the starting point is to clear the schedule and give ourselves to waiting in the presence of God, allowing Him to probe deeply into our hearts, thoroughly tilling up the soil of our lives, repenting of all that He places His finger upon, as He prepares us for the seeds of renewal.
In future postings I plan to begin "sowing the seeds" of God's word that will bring forth fruit unto righteousness, but I must say that if the fallow ground is not tended to, the seed will profit nothing!
May we sincerely seek Him until He comes and rains righteousness upon us!

Narrow Focus
When I served as a pastor, my focus was much broader, as my ministry called for proclamation of the whole counsel of God's word. But now, at this time in my life, the Lord's calling for me is to preach on repentance and renewal to His people. I guess that I could say that I have moved from the field of general practice to a specialty.
Even though the focus is narrow, the target is exceedingly large! The single greatest need in the American Church today is to turn back to God with their whole heart!
I am aware that there are those who love and serve the Lord, and who weep over the current spiritual state of the Church; and I encourage those to pray along with me for renewal.
I really have no way of knowing how many people might read these postings, but for those of you who do, I wanted to take this opportunity to state the purpose for the tone of this blog. The hour is late, the need is great, the Lord is coming for a pure, holy bride who has come out of the world and is living for His glory!
When He comes, may He find us faithful!

How Should We live?
The Apostle Peter, in his second epistle, writes about the time when this world will be consumed with a fervent heat, and God's judgement will be poured out. In the midst of this consideration he asks the question: "What manner of people out we to be?".
This, I believe, could be called the primary consideration for every Christian, every day! The choices that I make today, the words that I speak today, the attitudes that I express today; what eternal repercussions will they result in?
Are my choices for temporal comfort, enrichment, recognition, enjoyment; or, are my choices truly being made in light of eternity? Am I investing in things that will be consumed with the fervent heat of God's judgment, or am I laying up treasure in Heaven by seeking, trusting and obeying God on a daily basis?
May God grant us wisdom to realize that our lives are comprised of days, and may we choose daily to live as we ought in light of the fact that the things which are seen are temporal, while the things that are not seen are eternal.
God Bless

Why So Negative?
I want to try to communicate the sense of urgency that the Lord had given me concerning the Church. I know that much of what I write on this blog can be construed as "negative", but I believe that a more appropriate term would be "diagnostic".
The American Church is, by and large, in a backslidden state today. Countless polls have shown that things such as abortion, divorce, drug use (including alcohol), lying, cheating, sex outside of marriage, as well as any other vice, is just as common among professed believers as among those who make no profession of faith.
And, while Church leadership should be calling for repentance, it seems that their greater concern is to make the Church more appealing to the world! This has grown to the point that some of the newer "sanctuaries" are decorated to to have more in common with a darkened tavern than a place where the Light of the world is proclaimed! And, let me quickly add that I know there is no such thing as a "holy decor", but the only legitimate call of the Lord is to come out of the world and to be separate!
Why is Islam, as well as other radical religions growing in America, while Christianity is waining? I believe that it is because adherents of those religions are willing to stand firm, and call people to a radical lifestyle!
The Apostle Peter spoke of a time when judgment would begin at the house of God. We are living in that time! Will we have ears to hear and hearts to obey? Or will we be passed over as the Lord raises up a holy remnant who will love Him with all of their heart, soul, mind and strength?
Remember, many are called but few are chosen! What makes the difference? The "chosen" are those who are faithful, not to their own ideas, but to the Lord Jesus Christ!

Where Is The Reverence?
The last few months have proven to be somewhat awkward as I transition from 15 years of pastoring the same fellowship. I suppose such changes are always a challenge.
But something greatly troubles me. As I have had opportunity to visit different churches, I have observed what appears to be a trend: There is precious little reverence for sacred things today! Now, I have never been a stickler for a particular dress code, but I know that different experiments have proven that they way we dress has a direct impact upon our attitude.
That being said, there is a casual attitude in much of the church world today that reflects a lack of respect for Almighty God! People will actually go home from the office and "dress down" to go to a service! What can we possibly be thinking?! We would show more respect than that if we were to have audience with a dignitary of the world!
And, what's with all of the water bottles, soft drinks, coffee, texting, and various and assorted other expressions of the fact that we are not mindful that we have been called to a time of solemn assembly in the awesome presence of the Creator of all things?!
Is it any wonder that the Church is powerless today? Oh, we have worked up manifestations, we know those who will be "slain in the Spirit" just as soon as the emotional pitch is high enough, but where are the changed, set free, sanctified new creatures in Christ that the Church used to produce?
God has stirred my heart to call His people back to a life of genuine worship, which, frankly has absolutely nothing to do with music choices, but has everything to do with reverencing His Holy presence, and approaching Him in a manner that shows respect, and a healthy Godly fear!
Lord, touch your people once again, that we might truly know your sacred, mighty presence in our lives.

Gray vs. Black & White
You know, when it comes right down to it, most people know right from wrong. Oh, we can justify about anything that we want to, but we really know better.
Yet, sadly, because there is such a reluctance to crucify the flesh, we see Christians, from the pulpit to the pew, seeking to rationalize in areas that are resulting in impotence in the body of Christ.
I recently read statements from the pastor of a "mega-church" (we know that bigness means right) who is teaching his people that issues such as alcohol consumption and viewing R-rated movies are "gray areas", to be dictated by personal convictions.
I once asked a person who wanted to argue with me in regards to Christians and alcohol, "What would you think if you were to see me drinking?" Without hesitation, he said that I would be wrong to do so! I concur.
Those who indulge in entertainment, regardless of the rating, that takes the Lord's name in vain, is laced with profanity and sexual content; are you really going to stand before a holy God, who sacrificed His Son to deliver us from such, and tell Him that you feel it is OK?
If so, before you do, you just may want to read verses such as 1 Thess. 5:22, which commands us to "Abstain from every form of evil." (NKJV).
If I may refer to a recent posting o this site: If our hearts are right, such commandments are viewed as safeguards. If we are following a carnal mind, then we will view such as legalism.
I ask those who love the Lord to join me in fervently praying for a legitimate renewal in the Church, that will restore purity and power.

We're Not Home Yet
"These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth." (Hebrews 11:13 NKJV).
After having completed six decades of living in this world, I have to admit that the temptation to feel "settled" is real! There are time when a "retirement" mentality attempts to draw me into a mind-set of laying back and waiting for eternity to overtake me.
But as I allow the Spirit of the Lord to have His way in my life, I am reminded that, as long as I am here, I am here for a purpose! And, when my race is completed the Lord will usher me into His presence.
As I write this there are more lost people in the world than there has ever been! Their only hope is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ!, And, the Lord's stated means of communicating this Gospel is through His people!
The spirit of the age says: "You have much laid up for many days: eat, drink, take your ease." But the Spirit of the Lord says: "Jesus is coming soon. occupy until He arrives."
In reality, we are stranger and pilgrims here; let's live as if we are looking for that eternal city wherein dwells righteousness.

Obstacle or Safeguard?
Quite a few years ago, I heard a minister friend, Jack McIntosh, say this about Biblical standards: "Standards are like fences, and it's far better to build a fence at the edge of a cliff than to run an ambulance service in the valley." Makes sense to me.
So, why do so many who testify of loving the Lord become agitated, even to the point of anger, when one speaks of good, holy standards?
It comes down to our heart! If my heart is right with the Lord then I see His standards, or, rules, if you please, as divinely appointed safeguards meant to keep me from stumbling into something that will be to my detriment. If, on the other hand, my heart is at odds with God, then I will see standards as outmoded, "legalistic" obstacles standing between me and things that my heart desires.
Sadly, many, even leaders, in the Church, scoff at any idea of separation and holiness today; proudly and loudly proclaiming of their "liberty" in Christ, even as they are straying ever deeper into the snares of the enemy!
God says that we are to abstain from even the appearance of evil, yet many have so desensitized their conscience that they can regularly expose themselves to entertainment that blasphemes the holy Name of the Lord, is laced with all types of crude, lewd and suggestive scenes and language, with hardly a twinge of conviction!
I submit this for consideration: Is the lack of conviction because the Lord has changed His mind regarding sin, or have hearts become hardened to His voice?
I am learning that, whenever His commandments become burdensome, then I need to get into His presence and allow Him to search me out.
How is it with you? Are the Scriptural guidelines which define the straight, narrow road to Heaven seen as obstacles, or safeguards?

A Time To Grieve
When I began this blog, just a few days ago, my purpose was to address some of the critical issues that Iobserve in the Church, and to challenge the people of God to pursue Him and His will with a passion.
Frankly, after stepping out of a senior pastor roll in January of this year, my wife and I have have had occasion to visit quite a few different churches. I would like to be able to give a glowing report on the "state of the Church", but, in all honesty, my heart is heavy and my spirit is troubled by what I have seen!
Here is what I have observed: The Church has become so much like the world that there is precious little difference to be found. Psychology and counseling have replaced "praying through". Music is polished, power point presentation are first class, the atmosphere could easily make you think that you are the friendly environs of a coffee house; but there is no POWER to change lives!
Why?
Because so few are seeking the Lord today! People go to a Sunday morning, sixty minute gathering, where the music is designed to make you believe that God loves you and that His greatest desire is to give you more "stuff" to help you to be happy. The the "sermon" (if one can truly call it that) is more feel good, self empowering, "all about me" verbiage; and those who came in the door with deep spiritual needs, especially with the need to repent before a holy God, are sent on their way with an assurance that God loves them, and this could well be the best week of their life!
Brothers and sisters, the Church of the Living God needs a revelation of the holiness of God once again! A vision of His awe inspiring Personage that will penetrate to the core of our beings and show us our need to repent before His majesty!
I cannot go on listening to "pastors" drawing illustrations from ungodly movies and TV programs without responding! I cannot silently sit in the background and bite my tongue while Jesus is, again and again "wounded in the house of a friend"!
For those who genuinely love the Lord, it is well past time for us to once again "contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints".
Truly the Lord will return for His own. We do well to keep in mind the parable of the ten virgins found in Matthew chapter twenty five. The foolish and presumptuous were excluded when their lord finally arrived
May His coming find us faithfully waiting.

No Excess Baggage!
I have always enjoyed the Book of Hebrews. Even after 35 years of reading the Word of God, this remains one of my favorite Books.
It contains some unmistakably clear warnings about straying from the faith; and, it holds forth many personalities from the Old Testament as examples for us to follow.
The eleventh chapter has been called "the roll call of the faithful". In it we read of many who left everything behind to pursue the calling of God for their lives. Callings that demanded clear choices as to whether or not they were going to serve God. I encourage everyone to carefully and prayerfully read this chapter.
Then, in chapter 12, we are encouraged to emulate those who have gone before. We are told to consider their examples, and to lay aside every weight, as well as the sin, that so easily besets us!
In other words, there is no place in the life of a true disciple for things contrary to the purpose of God. On this point the Bible is unmistakably clear!
This truth is in direct opposition to the prevalent mind-set of this age. We see and hear church people contending for the legitimacy of all sorts of things that in their heart of hearts they know to be wrong!
The nitty-gritty of the consideration is this: Are we serious about being saved from our sins and the penalties thereof; or, are we just looking for enough religion to appease our conscience?
I can remember when the saints of God desired messages that would search then out, spotlight sin and point to the blood of Christ as the only remedy. But, it seems that we are in the age of which the Apostle wrote when he referenced a church that we seek out teachers who would tickle their ears with an easy believism.
Let's choose this day who we will serve! Let's make, or renew, our commitment to lay aside every weight and sin, and run with patience the race that is set before us.
I believe that the finish line is almost in sight! Let's press toward the mark!
