I certainly have good intentions when it comes to regularly updating this blog, but "things" just keep coming up! It's not that I feel that this outlet is unimportant, it's just that "things" of higher priority keep requiring more of my time.
It has been a month of transition for my wife & I. We were called by a small group of Christians with a request to shepherd them. After much prayer we believe that the Lord has ordained this new season of ministry for us at this time.
It seems that just when you you have your future planned the Lord begins to lead in another direction! I believe that this is meant to keep us living in daily dependence on Him.
So, unto all who may read this page- I solicit your prayers as I endeavor to incorporate this new mission into the other activities that the Lord has me involved in.
I do prayer that you will have a most blessed new year; and, I know that this will the case if you purpose to lived in a "surrendered life".
God bless.

Seasons Of Change
Have you ever considered that perhaps we become too accustomed to things as they are? We know where every piece of furniture is, we pretty much know what will be on the menu throughout the week, our schedule is pretty well know in advance- we are creatures of habit!
This isn't necessarily a bad thing, after all, if we had to learn everything new every day then we would live in constant confusion, never accomplishing much of anything.
But, consider this: If we become so ingrained in arena of familiarity and comfort that we resist whenever the Lord is trying to lead us to a new level of faith, then we have become entirely too established (another word for "stuck").
I believe that each New Year is a golden opportunity to reflect and to plan. To reflect upon the previous 12 months, realistically evaluating whether or not we made progress; and to plan ahead, prayerfully seeking the Lord's direction so that we might become all that He is leading us to be.
Growing in grace will challenge us and it will stretch us, but just as surely as the seasons of nature change, so we must be able and willing to change in order to accommodate the will and purpose of God for our life.
His desire is to lead us into new levels of experience in Him, but in order to realize this, we must be willing to step beyond the things that have become so "comfortable" to us.
But isn't that the essence of faith? Forgetting and reaching?
God bless you as you take a journey of faith into 2010 and all that it holds for you.

It's Been A While
I just noticed that my last posting here was on November 19th. It's amazing how time slips by! I had hoped to enter a daily post, with the exception of Sunday, but things come up, phone calls come in, trips become necessary, and- well, you know how it goes.
There is a deep spiritual truth here somewhere. That is this: There are things far too important to allow anything to interfere with! Unless we guard against it, we'll find ourselves distanced from God and wonder how it ever happened! We had the best of intentions, but something comes up and we push aside our devotional time for a day, then for 2 days, then, before you know it, the things of God which were at one time at the top of our priority list, have all but discarded as other things occupy our time and attention.
I suppose that, in the grand, eternal scheme of things, my daily postings are of little importance, but may we each one daily renew our walk with the Lord by safeguarding the precious time that we spend with Him alone in prayer and the Word.
I trust that all will have a blessed Christmas and Holiday season. Keep Him as you focus. Do not allow Him to get lost among all the "stuff" that this season heaps upon us.
I'll sincerely try to be more diligent in regularly postings. No promises, but I will try! However, if the choice is between posting and keeping my appointed time with the Lord, well, I'll opt for the time with Him every time!
God bless.

More On Thanksgiving
I am persuaded that so many of the things that trouble us would simply cease to be issues if we would learn to be people of thanksgiving. Not that problems aren't real; but being thankful for our blessings enables us to keep our troubles in proper perspective.
An old song of the Church has a great message along these lines:
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed
When you are discouraged thinking all is lost
Count your many blessings, name them one by one
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.
I want you to know that I am not simply spouting theory. I have been walking with the Lord for 36 years, and I have encountered some significant storms during this time. I know, from experience, that we can dwell on the problems, the hurts and disappointments, and the discouragement will deepen: or, we can choose to recount all that the Lord has done for us, such as saving us from hell, meeting our needs on a daily basis, and preparing a place for us in His eternal Heaven, and the cares of life will seem to diminish in their weightiness.
It comes down to choices. We can praise or we can complain! One makes the burdens lighter while the other adds to our woes.
My encouragement? "In everything give thanks..."
God bless.

Faith And Raging Rivers
Recently, as I was preparing to preach, the Lord turned my thoughts to Joshua chapter 4. This is where we find the account of Israel finally crossing over the Jordan river to begin to lay claim to the land of promise.
A few things are worthy of note here:
First, a definite act of faith would be required if they were to realize the promise of God. Remember that the previous generation of Israelites had come to this same point, only to allow their lack of faith to defeat them. As a result, the wandered in the wilderness for 40 years!
Secondly, there will always be a challenge to our faith decisions! At the time that they were to cross over Jordan, the river was at flood tide! The waters were raging and swirling in what must have been a very intimidating fashion! They would not be able to wait until the water level subsided because God had called them to cross over at this particular time!
Thirdly, as the feet of the priests, who were carrying the Ark of the covenant, touched the waters, only then did the waters part! It is when we cast ourselves without reservation upon the Lord and commit to obedience to His commands, that we are positioned to see His glory show forth!
Our time is NOW! We must not continually relegate all plans to some uncertain future time! Even as I write these words I am persuaded that the Lord will take this message to someone who is standing on the banks of a raging river, knowing that the Lord is calling them to step in, yet the fear factor is hindering!
Please receive this: If the Lord has called you, He will sustain and provide n marvelous ways! Faith, true, Bible faith, will always carry us beyond our own abilities so that we may experience His divine activity in our behalf!
Be bold in the Lord and see His glory, as you bravely walk into the very thing that would hinder you from His best for your life!
God bless.

Giving Thanks
1 Thess. 5:18 says that we are to "In everything give thanks...". This doesn't come naturally, we have to cultivate this mindset. Our tendency is to be happy in good times and to gripe and complain when things aren't going our way.
A Biblical world-view will help us to obey this Scriptural admonition. The Bible plainly tells us that we are pilgrims & sojourners here. We are not to become too attached to this world or it's ways. In fact, the Bible tells us that "all that is seen is temporal...".
If we will take hold of the truth that God has promised to work all things together for our eternal good, then we can give thanks, even if we do not understand what is going on. This is the essence of faith: Trusting God!
I want to encourage you to something that I did a few years ago; begin a "Thanksgiving Journal". Each day, take time to reflect upon the goodness of God, and ask Him to help you to see the reality of His working in your life. Or, as an old song says, "Count Your Blessings.".
You will soon find that, indeed, it is possible to "in everything give thanks.".
God bless.

At The Cross
I think that Christians need to live "near the cross". By that I mean that we ought never to forget the price that was paid for our redemption.
I have found in my personal walk with the Lord that as we live in the shadow of the cross we are able to see how terrible sin truly is. It is as we stray from the cross that sin becomes enticing, and we begin to rationalize that "maybe it's not really so bad" to indulge is things that are questionable.
We must remember that sin is what necessitated the need for Jesus, the pure Lamb of God, becoming a sin offering, shedding His life's blood, in order that we might have a hope of missing our just penalty of damnation, and being adopted into the family of God.
The cross is not just some "lucky charm" to ward off evil; nor is it simply a figure to adorn religious places: it is, rather, a symbol of the great love of God- a love so tremendous that He was compelled to take upon Himself the form of a servant and come to bear that old rugged cross up Calvary's slope, and there, to be crucified upon it as a sacrifice for our souls!
"Jesus, keep me near the cross..."
God bless.

Crossing Over
I recently received the news that a dear lady, who had been a part of the congregation that I pastored for 15 years, had passed away. It seems that she died in her sleep, and was discovered by her son.
Every time that I hear an account such as this I am reminded that life is brief! We are here but for a season, then we cross over into eternity. And, this is an experience common to all of humanity.
This also causes me to reaffirm that, when all is said and done, there is but one thing that truly matters: Is my name inscribed in the Lamb's Book of Life? Have I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior?
I am confident that this dear lady is now in the presence of the Lord. We will soon gather to pay respects and comfort the survivors, but there will be some there who will be gripped by a sense of finality and hopelessness.
The good news is, that because of Jesus Christ, we can extend a hope unto them that this separation need not be final! There can, and will, be a great reunion for all those who have embraced faith in the Lord, and who have been saved by His grace.
Funny how such words cease to be scoffed at in times such as this. I believe that this is because God has set eternity in the heart of man, and the passing of a loved one stirs up this reality.
How is it with your heart today? Do you know Him? Have you been born again?
If not, then why not today?
God bless.

Seasons
As I look at of my back door this morning I can see trees in various stages of foliage loss. Just a few weeks ago all was a luscious green.
Here in Indiana the seasons can be striking in their diversity.
Life is much that way. We are told in the book of Ecclesiastes that there are seasons for different events of life: We are born, we die- and, in between, there are many different events that are common to most lives.
The important thing is that we always realize that God is n control! If we have truly yielded our lives in to His hands than He is watching over us regardless of the season! And, He has promised that all will ultimately work together for our eternal good.
Faith will trust in this and refuse to be swayed from steadfastness as we journey through the various seasons of life!
The great news is that we are rushing toward eternity, and once we make that great transition, it will be one continual season of righteousness, peace and joy in His unobstructed presence!
Until then, may we learn to enjoy the seasons with all of the diverse experiences that they bring our way.
God bless.

Between
Between the flu and traveling out of state, I haven't posted in a few days. But I lived through the flu, and I returned safely from the trip, so, I thought I'd try to get regular in posting again.
As I think about being "between", I am reminded of the Apostle Paul's statement to the Philippians about being in a "state betwixt two.". He had a desire to go to be with the Lord, but he knew that his course had not yet been completed, and that the church needed his teaching and encouragement.
Should not that be the sentiment of each one of us? We have our heart established in heaven, but there is a great work to be done here in this world.
I believe that this is the way in which the Lord would have us to live: Fully committed to the "Great Commission", yet longing for the trumpet of the Lord to herald His coming!
May His blessings overflow in your life as you pursue His purpose for your life.
God bless

Whosoever
Aren't you glad that the word "whosoever" is found in John 3:16? I know that I am. Because this means that I am included!
This means that the avenue into eternal life is not dependent upon ethnicity, gender, nationality, social status, eye color or any of the other things that distinguish humans one from the other!
YOU are among the "whosoevers" that Jesus died for. You can be saved. But you have to receive Him as Lord and Savior. Have you done this? Have you repented of your sins and placed your faith in Him for salvation?
If not, then why not right now? This moment could be the greatest moment of your life. He has promised to receive all those who come to Him in faith, believing that He is the very Son of God!
God bless.

Hope Is An Anchor!
The last few verses of Hebrews 6 speak of a hope that will serve as an anchor of our soul. We certainly need this anchor today! Issues all around us are militantly working to keep us in a state of agitation ans hopelessness.
This "hope" is the promised future which is ours in Christ! A future that is free of sin, sickness, travails of life, and all of the issues that strive to rob us of our peace today.
We are told to "lay hold" upon this hope- to seize it, as a drowning person would grasp a life line. This requires of us a conscious choice and effort. We must press through all of the obstacles that would detract us from the Lord, and place our trust fully in Him.
As we allow Him to do so, the Lord will establish this hope firmly in our souls, and this hope will be a stabilizing factor when the storms of life rage against us!
This sounds like something worth pursuing to me!
How is your hope today? Do you have a blessed assurance that all will ultimately work together for your good? Or, are you tossed about with fears and doubts regarding he future?
Jesus says "Come unto me.... and I will give you rest." (Matt. 11:28).
May hope and peace be your portion as you walk in His will for your life.
God bless.

Not So Hot
It would seem that one of the various strains of flu has made it's way int o my body! This is manifested in a general state of feeling really bad, and in the way that my brain is refusing to function clearly!
That being said, I think that today's entry will be brief. I in fact, it ends here!

Why Can't I Just Be Happy?
Isn't this one of the great questions of life? Everyone seems to be looking for happiness, yet, happiness, if ever found at all, seems to be short lived! What is wrong?
The fact is this: Happiness will never be found as a result of seeking happiness; rather, happiness is a by-product of living a useful life in the will of God.
I would encourage everyone to read the book of Ecclesiastes with a prayerful, open mind, and allow the Lord to speak to you as you read. In this book we have an autobiographical look into the life of king Solomon, a person who had the material wealth to do absolutely anything that he desired. And, he did.
The end result of every pursuit was that he came up empty! Nothing could deliver the desired end result of genuine, lasting happiness.
At the conclusion of this book, Solomon concluded that the whole duty of man is to seek the Lord. and to do His will. This, my friend, is the true well-spring of happiness.
The truth is that we are created to walk in fellowship with the Lord, and in harmony with His eternal purposes. To do otherwise is guaranteed failure!
The truth that real freedom comes only through total surrender to God and His plan is a seeming contradiction that causes many to stumble; but, to those who will receive it, this is the pathway into the satisfying life that everyone genuinely longs for!
Why not take Him at His word today? If your quest for happiness seems to be all in vain, why not turn to God with all of your heart, place it all in His hands, and experience the reality of a deep seated assurance that, come what may, everything is going to work out! That is happiness!
God bless.

A Great Falling Away
In 2 Thessalonians chapter2, the apostle Paul referenced a great falling away prior to coming of the Lord, and the revealing of the Antichrist. Could we be living in just such a time?
I can only speak from personal observation, but in my 36 years of being a disciple of Jesus Christ I have never seen such a low spiritual tide in the Church. Allow me to list just a few of the issues that lead me to this conclusion:
There is little burden for the lost
Prayer is little more than a token thing- a religious formality
Entertainment has taken center stage in the Church
Biblical holiness is considered archaic- there is little difference from the world
There is little reverence for God. It's all about being "casual"
Comfort and convenience has replaced commitment
These are a few reasons (among many others) to be very concerned for those who profess salvation!
It is past time to call the Church back to a Biblical faith which confronts all of the "whosoevers" that come to Christ with the reality of a radical change in lifestyle, and a radical coming out of the world to a separated life of holiness and commitment!
By God's grace, may we not be among the masses who will fall away from the faith as the end approaches!
God bless

Are We Looking For Him?
The writer of Hebrews says that "unto them that look for Him shall He appear...". The question is: Are we looking for Him? Do we have a heart-felt expectation of His coming for His Church?
The Bible holds forth one truth that is positive evidence of such anticipation; 1 John 3:3 says "And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure."
So, here's the fact of the matter: If we aren't living a pure life, then, regardless of protests to the contrary, we are not looking for the coming of the Lord, nor are we prepared for this event!
This is the time to WAKE UP! There will be no 2 minute warning prior to His coming! The Bible speaks of this event as coming as a thief in the night, at a time unexpected by most.
Yet, we have been warned. Time and time again, God has faithfully sent messengers of His word to tell us that we must be living a prepared life!
As I write this on a Saturday morning, I am well aware that, if the Lord delays His coming, tomorrow will find thousands of professes Christians who will attend a service, be stirred by the music, have their "worship" time, then leave the sanctuary to engage in things that prove that their heart is not in fellowship with the Lord!
Folks, it's time to break up the fallow ground, repent of all ungodliness, embrace holiness and live as those who truly have a hope of eternal life! As those who are anticipating their entrance into His glorious presence!
My prayer is that all who read these words will ultimately and eternally be saved!
God bless.

God bless.

I Wonder How The Prophets Felt?
Do you ever try to warn people of the end result of their choices only to be rejected and ridiculed? Its amazing how people can simply refuse to consider the consequences of their choices in this life.
I know that the Lord is faithful to bring conviction to hearts, but it seems that folks just shake it off and go along their merry way to destruction! Truly, the god of this world has blinded the minds of those who believe not!
A greater marvel, however, is how those who have known the Lord, have tasted of His goodness, and have know the joys of sins forgiven, can backslide into a lifestyle of carelessness and sinfulness, living as if the Lord no longer means what He so plainly tells us in His word.
Some time back, I joined a popular social networking site and was able to connect with a lot of people, some of whom I haven't seen in quite a while. I must confess that I was saddened by some of their words, their discussion of TV, movies, books, etc. that they enjoyed. My disappointment at this was such that I cancelled my account.
Oh, I made a few comments regarding these issues, but found that they really weren't welcomed.
I would read of these same people "praying for revival", having "awesome worship services", "loving the Lord with all their heart"; and, frankly, I wonder how such can be so blind to their real spiritual state!
I think that many of us who Love God and seek after holiness have a little bit of an understanding of how the prophets of old must have felt. They were called to proclaim righteousness to the people of God, yet the people had no heart foe holiness- in fact, they saw no wrong in the way that they were living.
I implore all who read these words to search your hearts! Jesus emphatically warned us "be not deceived." Don't be among those who profess relationship with the Lord, but, sadly, they will hear Him say, "Depart from me, you worker of iniquity; I never knew you."
Those who have an ear, may the hear.
God bless.

When Our Will Is Not His Will
While talking with a fellow minister today, I remarked on how most Christians will readily say that they are willing to submit their will to the Lord. I believe that they are being honest when they make such statements.
However, when we are confronted head-on with a situation that requires us to relinquish our plans and go with the will of the Lord instead, that is where the conflict begins! But this is the arena in which true faith is proven! Will we trust and honor the Lord if it requires of us that we lay our will aside?
I have found that, at least in my interactions with church people, that when push comes to shove, MOST are unwilling to pray, as Jesus did, "Nevertheless, not my will, but thy will be done."
At this point people begin to make statements such as, "I prayed about it, and I feel that I am right."
It's commendable that we pray, but when the Lord's will is known, there is really nothing to pray about! It is simply a matter of obedience!
The longer that I serve the Lord, the more I realize that "many are called, but few are chosen." Sadly, the truth is that God has only a remnant among the multitudes who profess to have a relationship with Him. We are in a time when "every man does that which is right in his own eyes.", and, because judgment is not immediately forthcoming, people begin to think that disobedience isn't really so bad in the eyes of God.
Remember, Jesus is as a landowner taking a long journey. He left His servants with clear directions, and warned them that His return would be unexpected. He further taught of the dire realities that would be in store for those who chose to do other than He had directed.
Well, He is coming! He will reward the faithful, and He will punish the disobedient!
Which group will you & I be among?
God bless.

God's Presence
The Bible plainly tells us that the Lord never changes! Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever! We also know that He is not willing that any should perish, but that all come to repentance.
With that being said, why do we see so little evidence of His presence today? Oh, I'm not talking about the high-powered "worship" times that get people worked into a frenzy. I believe that there is more flesh than spirit in most of those times.
I'm talking about God's presence that changes lives, that instills a hatred for sin and a desire for holiness in the life of the believer! A "new creature", "born-again" reality that marks a person as God's own!
The answer is that God has never changed! But people have cast aside the clear teaching of Biblical salvation, and have constructed a theology of "sleazy grace" that enables them to profess a belief in God while denying the power thereof!
Revival was never meant to be a future "maybe"; it is meant to be an ever-present reality as we live with and for Him day-by-day!
I have a great burden for "christians" who think nothing of lying, or treat church attendance lightly, or are entangled in relationships that the Bible says is wrong- and the list goes an and on and on!
Please hear this, beloved: Jesus really is coming again; and, He is coming for those who are looking for Him!
All who are truly in that number are embracing holiness, eschewing evil, and endeavoring to honor the Lord in all that they do!
Are you in that number?
God bless.

How To Keep The Fire Burning
If you have been a Christian for much time at all then you know what it's like to go through periods of spiritual lethargy. Times when spiritual disciplines become tedious, the Bible seems dry, prayer seems mechanical- most who read this will know exactly what I'm getting at.
The Bible tells us that we as individuals will never have to endure any type of unique trial, but such things as we struggle with are common to all. In other words, you're not the only one to have ever felt this way!
So, how do we deal with these times? Are we just supposed to "let it run it's course"? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
Faith is a fight! A conflict between flesh and spirit! Our flesh may grow weary in well doing, but our inner man is to be renewed day by day!
How are we to realize this renewal? Look at David's approach to such in Psalm 103: "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name."
Sometimes we have to give ourselves a pep talk. We have to remind our self that God is still God! That His promises are still "Yea, and amen"; and His benefits are worth enumerating to our selves!
As we set ourselves to think upon His goodness unto us- His amazing grace toward us- we will sense a renewal of purpose and of spiritual zeal stirring in our hearts!
Never give in to despair! Fight the good fight of faith, and stir up the gift that is in you as you recount His goodness in your life!
And, don't wait until tomorrow. Why not start right now?
God bless.

Called Out
As I peruse the current Church landscape, I am tremendously concerned that there is so little distinction between the Church and the world around us. My wife and I have had opportunity to visit several churches during the last few months, and usually leave feeling disappointment over the experience.
I remember when one could visit almost any church and leave afterwards with a sense of having been in the presence of the Lord. Music would point to Him as One worthy of praise, and the preaching would be soundly established upon the Bible.
Not so today! Music is typically used to stir the emotions and to make the attendees feel good. The "preaching", if it can be called that, has more in common with pop psychology than with the word of God! Usually, the whole "experience" is structured to enhance one's self-esteem, and to equip one to realize their potential. This is not necessarily bad, but neither does it equate to the soul-searching, probing proclamation of God's word which is needed to effect eternal change in the lives of the hearers!
Beloved, we are called out of the world so that we might be holy vessels of His glory, revealers of His light which can lead lost souls to safety! If we choose to live as the world then we will never be instruments of change in the world!
May we embrace holiness as a lifestyle, and may we, by so doing, see His glory manifesting in our services once again! I hunger for such reality today.
God bless

No Victory Without A Battle!
For the last few days I have written about the problems that fell David's lot, as recorded in 1 Samuel 30. There, we find him and his men in some of life's most trying circumstances.
The lesson that we can take from this is that, if we will stay faithful to the Lord, He will work all things together for our good!
We see that David fought through the depression, the sense of loss, the misplaced blame of his men and all the other emotional battles that were threatening to overwhelm him, and he followed the direction that the Lord gave him!
As a result, we find that, not only did he rescue his family and regain all of his possessions, but he took the spoils of the Amalekites as "interest"! He ended up with much more than he had prior to his loss!
This will be the eternal reality of all who will remain faithful to God and his calling in our life. We may not necessarily be rich in the material things of this world, but we have an assurance of unimaginable blessings throughout the endless ages!
So, do not allow the enemy to defeat you through discouragement, weariness nor hardships! The battle is on, and, at times, the going is extremely difficult; but the truth is that we cannot lose as we follow the Lord!
Victory is assured to all who will simply refuse to grow weary in well doing! We can do that!
God bless.

Fighting The Good Fight
As we continue our consideration of David's response to his challenges, as recorded in 1 Samuel chapter 30, we find that after he had wept over his sense of loss, and after he had encouraged himself in the Lord, he sought the Lord's direction as to what he should do next.
The answer from God was that he was to pursue the enemy, engage him in battle, and recapture his family and his belongings.
So, David and his men set out. They soon overtook the Amalekites, and the battle was joined. We gather from the narrative that the battle began in the evening and lasted until the evening of the next day. This was an exceeding long time to stay engaged in rigorous combat, but victory or defeat for many people hung in the balance!
If we are to know the victory that the Lord has for us then we will, of necessity, develop a "warrior mentality" that will engage the enemy and refuse to give up until the battle is won! We may say that this sounds hard, but then, whoever told us that life is easy?
The fact is that there are eternal rewards or losses in the balance! We are called to war a good warfare! To fight a good fight! We are promised that if we refuse to grow weary in well doing, that in due season we shall reap!
As we read this account of the life of David, he is just days away from ascending to the throne as king over all of Israel! What if he had stopped at this juncture?
There is a valuable lesson here for us all! God's promises are true! Adversity does not negate His word! If we press o we will know all of His fullness in our lives!
May we be found fighting the good fight of faith!
God bless.

What Does God Want?
I have been sharing about David's response to tragedy as found in 1 Samuel chapter 30. He was living as a fugitive, his goods had been stolen, his family kidnapped, and his men were planning to stone him!
In the midst of this, David encouraged himself in the Lord his God!
Then, he sought the Lord's direction. Should he go after the enemy, or should he let go of the situation. Such times are a true indicator of our desire and willingness to receive the will of the Lord. It seems that we are always ready to fight for what is ours, and there is a time when we must do that; but, there are also times when the Lord will say to us "Just let it go, and trust me." That's hard!
But the very essence of faith is trusting that God knows best and that He is working toward bringing us into eternal blessings!
So, as you are going through whatever life has brought your way, and as you seek the face of God for wisdom, do not simply ask the Lord to validate your ideas and to help you fulfill all of your own plans! Ask Him, in sincerity, what He would have you do, then trust Him for the grace and the power to carry it out.
His will always proves to be the best choice.
God bless.

David's Example
In my last post I shared a little bit from 1 Samuel chapter 30, pertaining to David's extreme situation. I want to take this passage farther today.
As I stated yesterday, David & his men, when confronted with the overwhelming reality of all that had happened, lifted up their voices and wept till they could weep no more. There is a time when this is exactly what is needful.
However, there comes a time when we must rise up in our faith, come up from our weeping posture, and begin to look ahead! Certainly this is difficult at times, but it can make the difference between ultimate victory or defeat!
The sixth verse of this chapter tells us that "David encouraged himself in the Lord, his God."
This is always an option that we have before us! We aren't told exactly how David went about this, but I believe that he began to revisit times of God's past faithfulness in other hours of need. We know that God gave him victory over a lion, a bear, and over the fearful giant, Goliath. Each of these events were times of divine intervention in David's life!
How about you? Are you faced with challenges that threaten to overwhelm you?
Then, learn from David: Begin to think about all of the times when God has shown Himself mighty in your behalf! Call to remembrance the times when you didn't think that you would make it- but God came through for you!!
He's still God! Nothing is too hard for Him! And, He still loves you!!
May you be encouraged to face the future with your faith firmly established in the One who will never fail!
God bless.

A Time To Weep
Throughout this week I want to share some thoughts from 1 Samuel chapter 30 which will help us navigate the times of trouble that will surely come our way.
In this chapter we find David and his men returning to Ziklag, which was there home during this particular time, only to find it in ruins and all of their family members had been taken captive.
Realize that at this point in David's life he had been anointed to be king over God's people, but was living as a fugitive; and now, this tragedy overtakes him!
You see, it doesn't matter what our calling might be, we will meet with some major storms in this life. Jesus said that the fool built upon the sand; the wise built upon the rock, yet storms came into both lives!
So, what do we do in such times? How are we to handle such disappointments and tragedies?
There come those times when we need to give vent to the emotions that are welling up from within. This chapter tells us that these mighty men of war lifted up their voices and wept until they had no more power to weep. The Lord made us with feelings and emotions that need expression at times, and there is a time to weep.
This is nothing to be ashamed of. These were might warriors, yet, when the occasion called for it, they were not afraid to openly express the grief that the felt!
Tomorrow I hope to unfold this passage a little further, but, for today, I believe that some need to know that weeping is not necessarily a breech of faith: It is, rather, a God-given expression of pain and disappointment that can have a cleansing effect as we allow it to flow within the boundaries of Scriptural teaching.
As for the rest of the Church- we are told to weep with those who weep.
Be assured that there are brighter days ahead as we seek and serve the Lord.
God bless.

Interruptions
To my regular readers, I apologize for the lack of consistancy in posts over the last few days but, as we all konw, things unexpectedly happen!
Yesterday, I started the day with a toothache. Went to my dentist and was told that I needed a root canal! Hallelujah!!
Went to the endodontist, was numbed, drilled, mutilated- only to be told that the tooth was cracked and could not be saved!
Was sent to a third dentist who yanked the offending tusk from my upper gums, and, finally, was able to go back home.
Things happen!!
The good news is that their has been absolutely no pain! Blood, but no pain. And, the offending molar is no longer a problem for me.
This interruption actually proved to be a break in my plans which allowed me time to focus upon a portion of God's word that He has impressed upon my heart for this coming Sunday, and I have been given deeper understanding of the passage (1 Samuel 30:1-6). Perhaps I'll post some of these insights in coming days.
For now, I simply want to encourage you to recognize that your interruptions have not taken God by surprise, and He will bring forth something good from it as you keep your focus upon Him and His will for your life.
God bless.

Serve The Lord WIth Gladness
I've been tied up with projects that have kept me from posting as much as I'd like, but I do want to take the opportunity, while I have a minute, to encourage you in your walk with the Lord.
I know that Satan is as a roaring lion, and that times are hard; but I also that God is good, and that He has promised to complete His good work within us.
So, serve Him with gladness today! Who knows? This could be the very day that Jesus Christ descends t receive His saint unto Himself!
God bless.

Think It Not Strange
The apostle Peter tells us that problems are not strange occurrences for the child of God in this world. In fact, Jesus told us that in this world we will have tribulation. The fact is that problems are part and parcel of every life.
If we forget this then we will begin to think that we are somehow being treated unfairly when seasons of trial come our way.
At present, we live in a world tainted by the Fall. Satan is the present god of this world, and he only desires to steal, kill and destroy. He especially hates those who have been redeemed through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Just this morning I was thinking of the words of an old hymn of the Church: "While we walk the pilgrim pathway, clouds will overspread the sky; but when traveling days are over, not a shadow not a sigh." Yes, when we all get to Heaven, then the rejoicing will begin in earnest!
In this present world we are promised righteousness, peace and joy, but until we arrive at our eternal home we will have to endure difficulties and pains.
Do not allow the challenges to deter you from the course, because, as another old song says: "It will be worth it all when we see Jesus."!

Can We Limit God?
According to the Bible we have the ability to limit the purposes of God! Isn't that an awesome thought?
Psalm 78:41 states that Israel did exactly that. They limited the Holy One of Israel! How did they do that? By disobedience to His will!
The Lord has unrealized blessings for each one us which will enhance and enrich our lives in every area. In fact, Romans 8:32 says that God will, through Christ, freely give us all things!
However, disobedience will block His intended blessings in our lives.
May we purpose to obey Him in all areas, that we may know his unhindered blessings which will truly cause us to say with the Psalmist, "My cup runneth over."

Short Post Today
Time is short today, so I'll just take a moment to encourage all to be in attendance at a good, Bible preaching church tomorrow.
If I may add one other thought: Spend time in prayer today for the services tomorrow. The enemy will be fighting to restrain the purposes of God from coming to pass, but as God's people pray, binding the powers of the enemy, and asking the Lord to pour out His Spirit, it will make a definitive difference in the services.
God bless.

Praying And Planning
It has been my observation that most Christians pretty much leave God out of the planning phase of their lives. Typically, people look at such things as employment opportunity, salary ranges, possibilities for advancement, etc., as they formulate their game plan for life.
Prayer usually is a request for the Lord (who has been left out of the planning process) to bless all of our own ideas and goals.
Do you think that, perhaps, we have it backwards? If we believe that God is omniscient and that His will is the most important issue in life, then we certainly ought to seek His guidance as we are formulating our future pursuits.
Frankly, it isn't all about the money, or the prestige, or the location; the very most important consideration in life should be to find His will and to walk in it!
I cannot help but wonder how many missionaries and ministers have missed the call of the Lord by opting for the highest salary? The apostle Paul spoke of knowing how to be abased as well as knowing how to abound! He stated that he had learned the secret of contentment in every situation as long as he was in the will of the Lord!
My we learn the blessedness that surpasses worldly gain or recognition, and may we sincerely pray as we formulate future plans.
I think that eternity will prove this to be the wisest consideration.

More About Peace
One of the most elusive commodities today is peace. People are looking into all kinds of purported remedies in hopes of finding relief from the stress that seems to permeate this age.
Well, the Bible, God's holy word, has the answer. Hear the words of the Prophet Isaiah: "You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you." (Is. 26:3 NKJV).
The key is to choose to think upon the goodness of God and His promises to keep us and to provide for our needs. This will not always be easy. It is a discipline that must be practiced; but the fact is that we alone choose that which we will think upon.
I want to encourage you to read Philippians 4:8, and to commit it to memory. Then practice what the word says! Cast down contrary thoughts and focus upon the promises of God! You will find that, with time, this will become an habitual way of thinking about the issues of life. And, as you do so, you will not be ignoring the realities of the challenges of life, but you will be considering them in light of the truth that almighty God is greater than any problem, and that He is working in your behalf as you seek His will.
Let's listen to the Prophet Isaiah, and establish our minds upon the Lord.

Work Or Wait?
There is much confusion in the minds of some today concerning what our attitude should be in light of the Lord's coming. Some seem to feel that, since Jesus may return soon, there is really no need to plan or to work toward the future.
However, we are told to "occupy" until He comes. This means that we are to avoid a "bunker mentality" that would cause us to hide, watch and wait. We are, rather, to be doing all that we can for as long as we can.
No labor for the Lord is ever wasted! All that we do here is preparation for eternity.
To think that we will be idle, without beneficial enterprise, throughout eternity is erroneous! Saints are promised that we will rule & reign with Christ forever. There will be real tasks to fulfill in His administration. All that we faithfully do now is helping to prepare us for whatever the future holds.
Eternity will hold substance! Abraham looked for city, whose builder and maker is God! This is a real place, not some ethereal wisp where disembodied spirits float about aimlessly!
Certainly Jesus is coming again, and that will radically change everything! But, if rightly understood, this is no reason to withdraw from the realities of this present world! There is an appointed task for the believer! When our Lord appears in His glory, may He find us occupied with His business!

Prescription For Peace
I am certain that you do not need me to convince you of the turmoil in the world today. Not only do we see and hear of troubles via the news casts, we also feel the pressure in our personal lives as the social, economic and personal problems abound on every side!
Jesus spoke of just such a time as this; He said that men's hearts would fail them for fear as they looked upon the troubles that would come upon the earth. Truly, we live in prophetic times.
The sad truth is that Christians act as if they have no hope! They are encompassed by the problems of the world, and, seemingly, are looking to the world for remedy. It is not at all uncommon to listen to the saints talk of the various medications that they are on in hopes of settling their jangled nerves. They are hoping that, somehow, the government will come up with some plan to save them from catastrophe!
Please hear me: OUR HOPE IS NOT LIMITED TO THE RESOURCES OF THIS WORLD! In fact, God often rebuked His people for looking to "the arm of flesh" for their deliverance. He is our provider!
Yes, but how do we keep this before our hearts and minds?
Good question; and the answer is found in Philippians 4:6-7, :Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Get serious about prayer! Set aside an hour a day to get away from the worries and the distractions of the world, and spend time with God! Talk to Him, listen to Him. As we do so, the Holy Spirit will apply His precious promises to our hearts and minds, the result being a peace that passes all understanding, which assures us that, even though we do not know how, everything is going to work out for our eternal good!
My advice: Don't wait for tomorrow; begin today. Learn the blessed truth of walking in His peace- even in the midst of the storms of life.

Can We Still Blush?
Last night I had opportunity to be in a service where Evangelist John Muncy was speaking. In the course of his message he mentioned some programming that was coming up on HBO cable TV. Frankly, it was embarrassing to hear about the content of these shows. I guess that I'm "out of touch".
Yet, the tragedy is that many "Christians" subscribe to such programming and watch it on a regular basis, and they somehow think that the Lord is going to embrace them with open arms!
Please hear what the Lord had to say through the Prophet Jeremiah: "Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not ashamed, nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall. In the time of their punishment they shall be cast down, says the Lord." (Jer. 8:12 NKJV).
Dear one, if you can submit yourself to that which is sinful and not feel sharp twinge of conscious, then I submit to you that you have hardened your heart and that your soul is in jeopardy!
As we drove home from that service last night, I mentioned my concerns to my wife. I spoke of my grief over those who presumptuously think that they are ready for Heaven while indulging in sinful activities. As we talked, the words of Jesus came to mind, "many are called but few are chosen."
Please listen: In Genesis 6 we read of one named Noah. We do not know how many people were on the earth in his day, but we do know that out of the entire population of the world, only 8 souls were saved! Most of those who perished probably believed that they were good, moral people, yet they walked in disobedience to God!
God's nature has not changed! Just as in the days of Noah, there was a way of escape from His judgment, so there is a way today- but only one way! It is a way of holiness, entered into by repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, and continued in by a life of obedience from the heart!
By His grace, I pray that I never lose the capacity to be embarrassed by the gross immorality that abounds in this world! I will pray for the lost and endeavor to reach them with the Gospel, but I dare not partake of their sinfulness lest the day of His coming catch me unprepared!

Whatever Happened To Hell?
Eternal torment of the lost is never an issue that anyone should be happy about, but to fail to warn those without Christ of the consequences of their choices is nothing short of criminal!
Yet, we hear preachers,as well as churches, almost boasting of not being proclaimers of hell-fire and brimstone! Something is wrong with this picture!
Please consider these last words of the Olivet Discourse: "And these will do away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life." (Matt. 25:46 NKJV).
Many Christians state the Deuteronomy 28 is one of their favorite portions of Scripture, yet 3/4 of that chapter tells of the cursings that will follow disobedience to the Lord's word! Jesus spoke more of hell than of Heaven! People today must be warned of the wrath to come!
I well remember talking with a man who had at one time been a solid member of a Bible preaching church. This fellow began reading certain philosophical writings and became a self-proclaimed agnostic. As I tried to reason with him regarding eternity, he asked me "what is there to be saved from?" The obvious answer is "hell"!
The Gospel (good news) is of none effect unless their is contrasting bad news awaiting those who choose to refuse it! We must be willing to bear the reproach of being labeled "negative", or "judgmental". After all, souls are at stake!
The apostle Paul said, "Knowing therefore the terror of God, we persuade men." For the sake of the souls of humanity, may we be of the same mind.

The Faith Once Delivered
In the book of Jude, that little epistle right before the Revelation, the writer stated that his desire was to encourage his readers to earnestly contend for the faith once delivered unto the saints. The Greek actually implies "once for all times delivered."
In other words, the Church of every age should have a vital connection to the disciples of whom we read in the book of Acts. A simple, vibrant, living and powerful faith in the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ!
Not a lot has been written about the structure of early Christian services, but what can be found reminds us that Jesus Christ was always at the center of all things. Worship, partaking of Communion, and renewing of total commitment were involved in their gatherings.
In my opinion we would do well to recapture the simplicity with which the early Church worshipped and served the Lord. Our times of corporate worship are not intended to be times of being entertained, nor are they times to necessarily make me "feel good". They are meant to be times of fervent worship and instruction in the ways of righteousness. Our services should also be times of powerful ministry as we seek the Lord according to His word and He responds with confirming signs and wonders.
Such services would launch us forth with a fresh infilling of the Spirit to, not only keep us, but also to empower us to impact our world for the holy cause of Christ!
May we truly contend for such a faith once again.
God bless

A Typical Day In Indiana
We've been enjoying a fairly typical fallish day here in Indy. I went out for a morning run (fighting the weight battle), ran some errands, and, now, as I sit here writing this, I can see the trees in the backyard swaying in the cool breeze. There isn't really much at all to distinguish this Thursday from other mid-September days around here.
Do you know that this is exactly the kind of day that it will be when the trumpet of God sounds and the Lord descends to catch away His Church? Jesus said that humanity would be eating, drinking, marrying and giving in marriage: In other words, life will be "business as usual".
The tragedy in this is that so many are anticipating some kind of "sign" that the Lord's return is near. But that will not be the case! That is why it is of the utmost importance that we live in a state of preparedness, anticipating the "blessed hope" that the Lord has promised.
If the enemy of our soul cannot entice us to succumb to some deep, dark act of sin then he will endeavor to distract us from our closeness to the Lord. Jesus spoke of such a group of people, in Revelation chapter 2, when He rebuked the Ephesian believers for having left their first love.
Please notice that He found no fault in their activities, but the fact of the matter was that they had ceased from serving Him from a basis of love, and were now simply keeping their religious rules!
So, on this "typical" day, from my heart, I want to encourage every precious soul to keep Jesus Christ at the very center of all of your thoughts and actions, because "in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh."
God bless

Missed Yesterday
I typically try to post something everyday with the exception of Sundays. However, yesterday, being my 42 wedding anniversary, I spent the day with my bride. I'm pleased to say that after all this time, it's still a love affair!
But I do want to try and keep a regular schedule of posting. The Bible tells us, as Christians, that we are to provoke one another to love and to good works. We certainly are aware of the fact that so many things are provoking us in other directions.
So, simply put, my encouragement for all on this day is to love God with all of your being, and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus taught that all of the commandments are fulfilled in so doing.
Resist the spirit of this age and press into the the things of God, for, truly, Jesus is coming soon- perhaps today.
God bless.

Snippet From A Classic
With the current thought of salvation being that all one has to do is "just invite Jesus into your heart", I thought that this portion of Pilgrim's Progress might be a profitable reminder of the reality of "new creation" Bible salvation that truly changes one's life.
As Christian and Hope travel onward toward the Celestial City they talk of their experience of salvation.
Christian: "This was a revelation of Christ to your soul indeed. But tell me particularly what effect this had upon your spirit."
Hope: "It made me see that all the world, notwithstanding all the righteousness thereof, is in a state of condemnation. It made me see that God the Father, though He be just, can justly justify the coming sinner. It made me greatly ashamed of the vileness of my former life, and confounded me with the sense of my own ignorance; for there never came a thought into my heart before now that showed me so the beauty of Jesus Christ. It made me love a holy life, and long to do something for the honor and glory of the name of the Lord Jesus. Yea, I thought that had I now a thousand gallons of blood in my body, I could spill it all for the sake of the Lord Jesus."
Salvation is not the adding of Jesus to our life while continuing on in the old paths. It is, rather, a radical change, based upon a revelation that He is the rightful Lord of our lives; He has delivered us from unspeakable wrath to come, at a price beyond our ability to understand; and a desire to live a life of thanksgiving unto Him for His grace now motivates us in all that we do.
God bless

What Does Salvation Mean To You?
Just this morning I read an article that dealt with a survey taken regarding what attracts people to religion. A wide margin of people indicated that a positive message of rewards was far more appealing than "hell-fire and brimstone".
It's no wonder! The unregenerate mind doesn't want to think about the eternal consequences of personal sin. We like to think of ourselves as "good enough." And so we endeavor to find standards of judgment by which we stack up pretty good.
Please consider this: Salvation is all about rescue! You and I, everyone child of Adam's race, have personally chosen to pursue paths contrary to the ways of God. As a result, we are headed toward the destination that those paths inevitably arrive at! That destination is hell! No, we don't like the word nor the connotations associated with it, but that doesn't change the reality!
The only way to escape the dangers of the contrary path is to recognize and acknowledge that we are sinners, deserving of hell but desiring grace. Then, there must be a repentance of all contrary ways, and an embracing of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior!
For the one who has realized their lostness, and the truth of God's love in providing a way out, future choices are made in light of glorious truth of God's love which, when received, creates a corresponding love in our hearts for Him!
People may want to hear of rewards, but the Lord is not attempting to bribe us! He is endeavoring to warn us to flee from the wrath to come! Perhaps not a popular message, but the only message that can lead a lost soul from darkness to light.
God bless.

God bless.

A Missed Wake Up Call?
Today we observe the anniversary of the worst terrorist attach that our nation has known. I have vivid memories of that day 8 years ago when so many lives were lost.
I remember rushing to a sign shop and having a banner printed to announce that our church was open for prayer. As with many other churches across the land, we had new faces show up- for a very brief time. But, then, it was back to "business as usual".
Do you think that just maybe the events of that day were allowed to transpire in order to get the attention of this nation? A nation that has a church on most every corner yet, the spiritual level is at an all time low!
One thing about that day which has intrigued me is that the loss of life resulting from the attacks was just about equal to the loss of life that is accomplished through the atrocity of abortion each and every day!
My personal belief is that, as a result of having covered this land with the blood of the innocent, our nation has a weighty judgment hanging over it that God will not turn away from. We may postpone judgment for a while if genuine revival is sought ans received, but, as a world power, I fear that America's greatest day are behind her! In support of this I refer the reader to the 24th chapter of second Kings.
Am I unpatriotic? I think not. My first allegiance is to God, His word and His cause. And in that light, I am commissioned to lift my voice as a trumpet to declare the transgressions of an increasingly secular nation and a backslidden church!
The Lord speaks to this Laodicean age and says "behold, I stand at the door and knock...". Will we open the door?

Healthy Dissatisfaction
Over the years I have learned that the Lord typically begins change in us by creating a state of agitation over the status quo. We begin to become greatly dissatisfied with the situation as it exists and start looking for cause and solution for this unrest within us.
It is important that we recognize this for what it is. It is possible to begin looking toward worldly things to settle our spirits. We must rather look to Lord and draw closer to Him through prayer and the Word.
Such a pursuit may take us through times of intense soul searching and will more than likely reveal degrees of carnality in us that we were not aware of before. Things that we thought to be of little significance will become big issues as God endeavors to lead us to new levels of Christlikeness. Sin will become a serious issue as we have more of the mind of Christ manifest in our lives.
But this is the goal, to be free of all besetting weights and sins, walking in the glorious liberty of the children of God.
Such times may not be pleasant, but they will always yield peaceable and Godly fruit in our lives as we endure and allow the loving correction and instruction of our loving Heavenly Father to accomplish it's intended purpose.

Life In The "Real World"
Over the last couple of day I have been reminded of the very real challenges of living out your faith in the "real world."
I have a neighbor who seems to believe that they own a portion of my property. I have also found out that they are totally unwilling to discuss this in a reasonable fashion!
Actually this is just a flair-up of a problem that started last year. As a result of this I have had to have my property surveyed (not a cheap proposition!), acquire the services of an attorney to communicate the results to the above mentioned neighbor (another "not cheap"), and deal with the stress that all of this creates. And, now, it seems that they have forgotten those results!
But, by far, the biggest challenge is to not allow this to get into my spirit. It's not easy to remember that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood" when a person is challenging you- but it is possible! and while this is a challenge, I know that the Lord will work it out.
I share this just to let you know that preachers live in the same world that you do. I also want you to know that I have learned that it is only in the challenging times that we really grow in our faith.
So, whatever you might be facing, big or small, remember to evaluate it in light of eternity, and endeavor to conduct yourself as a representative of Jesus Christ in all circumstances.
Meekness is not to be confused with weakness, but even while taking a firm stand for what is right we must do so in a Godly spirit!

Wisdom From The Classics
Just recently I have been reading through Pilgrim's Progress, by John Bunyon. The metaphors and illustrations used in his writings are truly amazing. While we dare not place any writings on a par with Scripture, nevertheless, some writing are a result of inspiration from the Lord.
If you have never read Bunyon's writings then I would encourage you to do so. You will find that the struggles that you face are illustrated therein, as well as the importance of remaining steadfast in your faith.
The fact of the matter is that most professed Christians today have a low regard for the warnings of the Bible, and are mostly lead by their feelings and emotions. Please realize how dangerous this is! The way to Heaven is filled with "many dangers, toils and snares", but we will arrive there if we continue on, steadfast in the faith!
As a pilgrim, are you making progress in your pursuit of that eternal prize? The answer to that question is far too important to be taken for granted!
May we have ears to hear that "great cloud of witnesses" encouraging us toward the goal!
God bless

Saturday Sale!
As I write this, on a beautiful Saturday morning, my wife has just set up for a yard sale. So, that means that there is little time to tarry at the keyboard!
In light of the pressing time constraint allow me to simply say that I pray God's richest and best for you this day as you seek and follow His will for your life. Remember that wherever His Spirit leads us, His power and provision will sustain us.

The Presence Of God
There are many things pertaining to God that we are simply not able to fully understand. For instance, God is everywhere! Most Christians will nod in agreement with this statement, and accept it doctrinally, but we need for this to become so real to us that we know He is always with us! We cannot go anyplace where He is not!
Jesus made a promise that He would be with us always, even to the end of the ages! Oh, how we need to get this established in our spirits! How often has the enemy told you that you are alone? That God has forsaken you? And, because you couldn't "feel" His presence you were prone to doubt that He was there.
Beloved, always remember that the just shall live by faith! Faith is all the evidence that we need of the truth of things not seen!
How can our faith be established in the truth that God is with us? Romans 10:17 tells us that the word of God is the source of such faith. Read it! Think upon it! commit it to memory! Allow the Holy Spirit to write it upon the tablet of your heart! And, if we will do so, then in the hour of trial and darkness, He will bring assurance to us that, indeed, we are never alone! The eternal, almighty, omnipresent God of all creation is watching over us to see that nothing outside of the framework of His will touches our lives!
With this as our truth, may we go boldly into the day, knowing that the One unto whom we have committed out lives is watching, guarding, directing us in ways that, even if we cannot understand, nevertheless we know that He is working all things together for our eternal good!

"Keep On Truckin'"
Growing up in the 60s this was a phrase that we were familiar with. Keep on truckin' was simply a way of saying "hang in there", or "don't give up".
If ever there was an area of life in which this advice was important, certainly it would be our walk with the Lord. When all is said and done, when the smoke clears and the dust has settled, those who stand firm in their faith will be rejoicing in the fact that they are overcomers, and all the promises of God are to be forever experienced!
The challenge is that we have an enemy who is committed to defeating us and turning us from our steadfast pursuit of God's will. The Bible warns us to be sober and vigilant in the light of this truth.
The key to our victory is found the 12th chapter of the book of Hebrews where the inspired writer encourages us to patiently run our race while "looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith."
Keeping our eyes upon Him, and heart filled with His word, will encourage and enable us to overcome any challenge or discouragement that the enemy will ever place in our pathway!
So, keep on truckin', and one day, perhaps soon, we will be standing together in His holy presence, rejoicing that we have made it all the way by His grace!
God bless

Pilgrims
"This world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through...". These words from an old spiritual song really should be reflective of our attitude while on our journey through this life.
The problem is that there are so many "things" that are constantly vying for our attention and our affections. And, our fallen nature is always looking for those things that appeal to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life.
In some ways prosperity is more dangerous than persecution. David once asked the Lord to make the table of his enemies a snare and a stumbling block. The "table" represents material things, things that we would call "blessings". Yet, once anything begins to occupy the spot in our lives that is to be reserved for God alone, that thing, whatever it might be, will become a snare and a stumbling block!
So, as we travel through this world we should be thankful for all of the "things" that enhance our lives, but hold them loosely and use them wisely, because, after all, "this world is not my home, I'm just a passin' through."!
God bless

What If?
Many us are familiar with passages in the Bible, such as 1 Thes. 4:13-18, which speak of the coming of the Lord for His Church. We also have read, or heard, that He is coming for those who are looking for Him and who are living a holy life.
What if He were to come today? I can't help but wonder how many would be ready, and how many would realize that they had played the fool by believing that "just a little sin" wasn't really so bad?!
Beloved, the Church must once again discover the hard sayings of the Bible which warn against affinity with the world and tells us that the new life within us must be nurtured and lived out on a daily basis.
Jesus said that in the judgment many would fearfully and tearfully proclaim that they knew Him, and had even done mighty works in His name, but His final words will be a command to depart from Him because there was no real relationship with Him!
I find it difficult to imagine anything more terrifying that hearing those words after having lived with a foolish presumption while knowingly disregarding the Lords call to true discipleship!
The good news is that we have this day, right now, to examine our lives in the light of Holy Scripture and to make whatever changes are necessary in order to be living in His will.
He really is coming again! And, one day, perhaps soon, the scenario will be a "what if", but a blessed reality for those who are living for Him!
God bless.

More Wisdom From The Past
We are definitely living in an era of "Christian Lite"! Sermons focus on feeling good and prospering, whereas in times past faithful preachers challenged the saints to die to self and to live for God and His holy cause.
The great danger of lukewarmness is that no one seems to recognize it in their own life. Therefore we must allow the word of God to be a mirror in which we see ourselves as we really are.
Leonard Ravenhill wrote his well known book "Why Revival Tarries" more than 50 years ago. A close friend of his, David Wilkerson, says that Brother Ravenhill died with a broken heart that, after 50+ years, the Church had greater need of renewal than when he first wrote and published this book.
Please read the following with an open heart: "A Christian dreaming before his television night by night, has a dead brain and a bankrupt soul. He would do better to persuade God to let him quit this world if he is so out of touch with this lax, loose, licentious age that blindness of the sinner no longer tears his soul."
Brethren, such bold, Biblical, soul-searching messages need to be tearfully proclaimed from every pulpit throughout America today!
Most will reject it, or feel that someone else may need it; but there is a holy remnant who will have ears to hear and hearts to respond to this needed word of God!
We will either have our hearts broken, stirred and changed, or we will settle for having our ears tickled!
What will your choice be?
God bless.

Wisdom From The Past
For those who sincerely desire to live for the Lord in this present age, I would encourage you to look to the past and to consider some of the wisdom of those who have gone before. After all, Hebrews 12 tells of a great cloud of witnesses that we can learn from.
The sad truth is that, at present, there are few examples of what a Godly life truly is! That is because most professed Christians, even leaders, have been blinded and deceived by the spirit of this present age!
Allow me to quote from the writings of A. W. Tozer, who, speaking of the youth in his congregation, had these words: " I refuse to deceive and damn them by teaching that you can be a Christian and love this present world, for you cannot.
You can be a hypocrite and love the world.
You can be a deceived ruler in the religious system and love the world.
You can be a cheap, snobbish, modern Christian and love the world.
But you cannot be a genuine Bible Christian and love the world. It would grieve me to stand alone on this principle, but I will not lie to you about it."
Contrast this with the "entertain them, pamper them, do whatever it takes to keep them in the 'church' mentality that pervades today, and you can begin to see just how far we have fallen!
May the Lord grant us the grace and the boldness to grasp the rope of wisdom that runs all the way back to the Book of Acts, and realize that "if any man loves the world the love of the Father is not in him."
God bless.

Few There Be
Beloved, my heart is grieved over the current state of the Church! Sin is looked upon so lightly, commitment to the the things of the Lord are considered optional, most of those who have been in church for years know so little of the Bible's teachings; yet, everyone feels that they are on the way to God's Heaven!
As God is my witness, it is not my desire to to just be critical, but it is criminal that more "preachers" are not addressing the backslidden state of the Church today!
In my recent reading of the Bible, I have been reading 2 Kings, which is basically an historical book. In this book we read of several of Judah's kings who endeavored to follow after God, but they did not remove the high places where the people continued to offer sacrifices to pagan deities. It seems that the people wanted to keep the Temple observances which the Lord had given through Moses, but they wanted their activities "on the side" also.
This is a picture of much of the church world today: They go to church, "get their praise on", get their blessing; then it's back to their "high place" to pollute their vessels with the grossest of verbal and visual contamination that they call entertainment!
Because of this their thoughts and conversation are increasingly corrupt, but they do not recognize it as such; and, they will even defend their "freedom" to engage in such like!
Please hear me: The strait and narrow way that Jesus said leads to life, is a holy pathway! We cannot enter in thereat unless we willingly lay aside the sin which so easily besets us and receive His cleansing!
Many who engage in sinful activities today have memories of a time when evil was disdained and avoided! But, somehow, the things once despised have become comfortable involvements!
Please hear me! This is not a result of the Lord having changed His mind: It is, rather a result of the heart becoming hardened! God still directs us to avoid even the appearance of evil!
If we are to be among the "few" who find and enter the strait and narrow way, it will be because we have determined to let the word of God be our standard, and we are mortifying the flesh, feeding the spirit, being transformed by the renewing of our minds, taking up our cross and following Jesus every day!
Not a salvation of works, but the Biblical expression of having been born again and becoming a new creation in Christ!
May we have ears to hear.
God bless

HOW?
How can we live a separated, holy life when everything around us is working to draw us away from the ways of the Lord?
Many times over the years I have talked with individuals who were struggling with living out their faith in God. They will typically tell me how difficult it is in their circumstances, as if they are somehow unique, facing temptations that are more challenging than others face.
First of all, this simply is not true! The Bible plainly tells us that there is no temptation that we will ever face that is uncommon to humanity! We all face extreme challenges to our faith!
What I usually find in talking with these people is that they are making little,if any, real effort to live a separated lifestyle! They want to hang with a worldly crowd, keep consuming the same worldly entertainment, simply attempting to add Jesus to their old lifestyle! That will never work!
So, how can we walk in victory over the world, the flesh and the devil?
As in all things, Jesus Christ is our ultimate example! We read, in Hebrews 12:2, that He endured being tempted in all points such as we are, for the joy that was set before Him!
In other words, He kept His eyes on the goal! His mind and heart were filled with the joys which awaited Him st the end of His earthly sojourn!
Paul tells us in Colossians 3:2 that we are to set our minds on things above, on Heavenly things, not on the things of this world.
So the answer to the question of "How?" is this: Make a full commitment to the Lord and to the things of God! Abide in the word and let the word abide in you (John 15:7). Think often about what awaits you at the end of this journey. Separate yourself from carnal things that will most assuredly entangle you. "Press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:14).
The more that you focus upon and commit to the things of God, the more estranged you will find that you are from the weights and the sins that so easily beset us.
The goal is drawing nearer with each passing moment! Press on! It will be worth it all!
God Bless

God Bless

Unrealized/Ignored Danger
As I have previously stated, I have a tremendous concern for the current state of the Church, and for those professed Christians who seem to be comfortable with the carnality reflected by the "saints" today.
I am persuaded that the enemy has found entertainment to be one of his most successful inroads into the lives of people. Over the last three to four decades Christians have, after brief, initial protest, embraced whatever the TV and movie producers have pumped out! And, the level of profanity, sexual content and violence has escalated many times over.
Do they no longer have the capacity to be grieved by that which grieves the Lord? Has the Church become like those of whom the Prophet Jeremiah referenced when he spoke of those who had lost their ability to blush with shame?
There is one particular passage of Scripture that addresses this present situation with crystal clarity: Romans chapter one concludes with grave warnings for those who choose sin over holiness, and closes with these words: "Who knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them."
What is the Apostle saying? Just this; that there are people who would never engage in these sins, but they derive vicarious pleasure out of the activities of those who do! Those who laugh at the profane and blasphemous humor; those who revel in the sexual plots of the TV and movie plots; those who no longer weep over sin but, rather, find entertainment value in it!
If we choose to make light of this, we do so to our own eternal hurt!
The Lord has stirred my heart to address a backslidden Church that is in danger of having it's candlestick taken out of His presence (read Revelation two and three). If this speaks to you, then I beseech you to repent and put such things out of your life! If your heart and hands are clean before the Lord, then I beseech you to join with me in praying for, and in working for, a legitimate revival in the Church today!
As we read the Bible we see that those who comprise the true people of God have always been but a remnant of all who profess. This remnant is open to "whosoever", but is made up of only those who have repented of sin and have embraced the Lordship of Jesus Christ!
May we have ears to hear!
God bless.

Unclean Lips
I've always thought it interesting that the prophet Isaiah, when confronted with the holy presence of God (Isaiah 6), mentioned that he was a man of unclean lips. But further thought reveals the core of His problem.
Jesus stated that the lips simply speak forth what is in our hearts. In other words, if that which issues forth from our mouth is profane, off-color, blasphemous, it is because our heart is defiled!
Isn't it amazing to hear Christians, even preachers, using words and terms that were recognized as wrong just a few short years ago? Some "cutting edge" preachers even consider this to be cool, liberated, enabling them to relate to the sinner.
A more accurate evaluation would be that the heart has been so corrupted by TV, movies, books, music, conversation, etc., that defilement simply flows forth.
What is needed is a revelation, such as Isaiah had, that will cause the people of God to see the wrongness- the sinfulness- of such talk, and to seek remedy at the source.
May the fire from the altar of God truly touch and cleanse the Church once again.
God bless.

Feeding The Birds
As I was thinking about writing this morning, I am compelled to revisit the theme of previous posts: "Break up your fallow ground..." (Hosea 10:12).
I am certain that some tremendous sermons were preached across the length and breadth of our land yesterday. But, I am just as certain that most of them simply became food for the fowls of the air as the word preached fell upon hearts that are hard toward the things of the Lord!
Often I have a sense of grief in a church service as the "praise team" stirs the congregation to lift their hands and their voices in "worship" unto the Lord. I am grieved by the realization that many, if not most, of the people in our services have not cleansed their hearts and, because of this, their "praise" is no more than a religious exercise that is actually a mockery of what true worship ought to be!
People come into the sanctuary from a week of feasting on entertainment that grieves the heart of God; many walk into the church smiling at others even though they have been fighting at home with the family all week; many are involved in sinful sexual activities- and the list goes on, and on, and on!
So, another sermon becomes another feast for the fowls!
What are we to do? What is the solution?
R-E-P-E-N-T! Break up the hardened ground! Apologize to God and pray His forgiveness and His cleansing!
My fervent desire is that our services will become, once again, solemn, holy assemblies in which the glory of God is beheld in such a fashion as to make us aware of our needs to be a holy people!
May the Word, when it comes unto us, not become food for the birds, but, rather, nourishment for our souls, as it finds a place in the broken up ground to take root and bear fruit!
Eternity is overtaking us. Only those who look for the Lord will be received by Him: And, everyone who genuinely has this hope will purify themselves, even as He is pure.
May we have ears to hear.
God bless.

Where Is The Commitment?
I had occasion to talk with a pastor in my city this morning. As we talked, I heard a common lament regarding the lack of faithfulness among the "saints". It seems that little reason is needed for most to miss the appointed times of worship. Not to mention the challenge of getting people to step up and engage in a ministry that requires commitment.
As we talked, it came to my mind that the Lord has always had only a remnant of those who professed who were true believers. It is no different today!
Jesus Christ Himself spoke of the pathway to Heaven as being strait and narrow! Requiring that we genuinely follow Him if we are to have a legitimate hope of spending forever with Him. Jesus said that not everyone who calls Him Lord will enter Heaven, but only those who do the will of the Father!
Why is this message so rejected by the professing church today? How have those who should know better become so deafened and blinded toward the truth?
The call to follow Christ is a call to a radical lifestyle of forsaking sin- even the appearance of evil- and perfecting holiness in the fear of God!
The beauty of the new birth is that it brings to life the desire within us to live in such a fashion!
The last day message to us is "be not deceived." Examine yourself in the light of Scripture, and know that your heart is right with God!
Our eternal soul is worth whatever effort is needed to secure its salvation!
How are we living in light of eternity?
God bless.

NO Good Thing!
Quite a few years ago there was a popular comic strip named "Pogo". It featured Pogo the 'possum and his friends. One of Pogo's famous lines was "We has found the enemy and it is us!"
Pogo's statement could have been taken directly out of Romans chapter 7, which says: "For I know that in me (that is in my flesh) nothing good dwells...". (Romans 7:18 NKJV). This is a lesson that every Christian desperately needs to learn!
The flesh make a tremendous servant, but it is a cruel master! And, it is cunning! That is why we have so many warnings about the flesh n the New Testament.
One thing that we need to realize is that there can be no peaceful coexistence between spirit and flesh; one or the other will prevail. Therefore we are admonished to mortify the (put to death) the fleshly desires that war against the soul.
This we are well able to do through the enabling presence and power of the Spirit of God. And, this we must do if we are to have a Biblical hope of true discipleship.
It is from this basis that the Apostle makes the grand statement found in Romans 8:1, which states freedom from condemnation in Christ!
May we walk in this liberty today!
God bless.

How To Stay Zealous
Do you ever struggle with keeping your faith alive & vibrant? Secondly, do you ever wonder if others struggle like you do?
Paul tells us in his Corinthian letters that no temptations have come our way except those that are common to the human experience. So, yes, others struggle also.
That being the case, why do some persevers while others slack off or fall by the wayside? Thie question deserves careful consideration because we all wil be confronted with it, perhaps many times in the course of our journey through this life!
I believe that first Corinthians chapter fifteen holds the answer. This has been called the great "resurrection chapter" of the Bible. In this passage Paul defines and defends the cardinal doctrine of the resurrection of Christ, as well as that of the believer. This chapter encourages us to consider life from the perspective of etrenity.
In verse fifty eight we are told to, in light of the truth of the resurrection, to press onward in a life of godly conduct, as we pursue the prize!
Let's briefly consider the admonitions of this verse:
"Be steadfast". This implies a decision to take a stand! A commiting of ourselves to a purpose!
"Unmoveable". This is an ongoing reinforcing of that initial decision!
"Always abounding in the work of the Lord." This is the singular point at which most people fail! As the Galatians, most begin well, but one thing or another draws their attention away from their "first love" for the Lord, and, before they realize it, they are backslidden! Oh, many such still go to church; some are even leaders in their churches- but, in their hearts they know that things aren't as they used to be, or as they should be.
So, what can be done?
Simply put: "Repent, and do your first works." This is what Jesus told the Ephesian church in Revelation chapter two. It is still sound advise today!
Then, "abound" in the work of the Lord! There is still a lost world to reach! We live in a generation that knows little of the genuine presence and power of God! Be committed to living out a vibrant Christian witness! Beginning in your home!
Back to Paul's teachings: He assured us that our labor is not in vane in the Lord! All other endeavors are of little, if any, eternal profit, but that which is done for Christ carries with it, not only rewards in this life, but, more importantly, the life to come!
How do we keep our zeal? Stay prayerful, stay busy for God! Stir up that gift of the Holy Spirit which is in you!
There is joy in serving the Lord!
God bless.

Let This Mind Be In You...
In Philippians 2:5 Christians are given this admonition: "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." The text then goes on to tell of the humility of Christ in coming to be the Lamb of God who would take away our sins.
This is the end toward which the Lord is leading us: A life that is totally dedicated to the eternal cause of Christ.
But the flesh, our old nature, militates against this, always demanding to be appeased in ways that will satisfy the carnal senses.
The great deception is to believe that we can somehow strike a deal of peaceful coexistence between spirit & flesh! This is absolutely impossible!
In order to have the mind of Christ, we must crucify, or resist the flesh. This is so radically different from that which surrounds us on a daily basis that it will require a determined effort on our part to embrace this Biblical directive.
Whereas the early Church gave much time to fasting and praying, modern "saints" are much more conversant with feasting and playing! And the anemic state of the Church is evidence of this sad truth!
Brothers and sisters, we are called to warfare! Things of eternal consequence hang in the balance! Resist the siren call of the world, flesh and devil, and embrace and nurture the mindset of the Christ who has called us to be His disciples!
The Apostle, in this same chapter, tells of the coming time when every knee shall bow, and every tongue will confess the Lordship of Christ; and, then he tells us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling! In other words, seek the will of God with a sincere and earnest heart!
We're in the heat of the conflict now, but "What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see..."!
Let's be found living as those who expect the return of their Lord!
God Bless.
